Tearing Down Sessions Before 
Deleting QAM Modulators 

 

Our engineers recommend that system operators who intend to delete a device in 

the QAM-family of modulators should first tear down sessions related to that 

device. If system operators delete a device in the QAM-family of modulators 

without first tearing down its related sessions, system performance may be 

impacted. The Digital Network Control System (DNCS) may waste valuable CPU 

time trying to associate these QAM-related sessions with a modulator that no 

longer exists on the system. A session without an associated QAM modulator 

device is known as an orphaned session. 
Note:  This recommendation pertains only to those instances when a device in the 

QAM-family of modulators is to be deleted. System operators do not have to first 

tear down sessions when replacing a device. 

 
 
 

This bulletin serves to remind system operators to tear down sessions related to 

any modulator before deleting that modulator. 

This bulletin is written for system operators of the Digital Broadband Delivery 

System (DBDS). Field service engineers who help system operators manage their 

systems may also find the information in this bulletin to be useful. 

This bulletin pertains to all sites that run System Release 1.5 (including service 

packs) and later software.
