SCREEN FORMAT & RESOLUTION
In addition to resolution and interlacing, a television picture is also defined by its aspect ratio—aspect ratio equals the ratio of the
screen’s width to its height.
Analog TV (i.e., non-digital, conventional TV):
Aspect ratio = 4 units wide by 3 units high (4:3).
SDTV & EDTV = 4:3 or 16:9.
HDTV = 16:9 (nearly twice as wide as it is tall.)
HDTV’s aspect ratio is approximately the shape of theatrical movie screens, which makes HD an ideal format for viewing

To optimize the display of programs on your television:
Press INFO, then ARROW Right to
Audio/Video
and select
Change Resolution & Format
.
Press
SELECT
until you see the settings you want.
OR, using the RES (Resolution) key on the front panel of the DIRECTV HD DVR (HR25, HR34, HR44 and above) to change the
resolution, but not the screen format, press RES and cycle through the options until you see the indicator light illuminate on
the front of the Receiver for the resolution you want.
NOTE: In Native mode, the Receiver automatically adjusts the resolution to match individual TV programs as they are tuned. To
confirm your Receiver’s Native setting, press MENU, select Settings & Help, then select Settings, then Display, then Video. Press
SELECT on the Native field to toggle this setting On or Off.
