Licensing 

Install/Configure 

The  CA  ARCserve  Backup  Agent  for  Open  Files  follows  the  standard  installation  procedure  of  CA  ARCserve  Backup.  You  must 
install the Windows or the NetWare Engine on each Windows or NetWare computer that has files to be backed up. Install the 
Backup Agent  for Open Files Console on a  server or workstation on the network from  which  you will manage the backup and 
restoration of files. For more information see the Implementation Guide. 

You can install and verify the license for the CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Open Files on the CA ARCserve Backup primary server 
or a stand-alone server. When you upgrade to CA ARCserve Backup, you must enter both, the license key and the upgrade key 
for the agent on the primary server, or the stand-alone server.  If you are using an older version of the agent, then CA ARCserve 
Backup checks for the license on the server where you have installed the agent. For more information about licensing, see the 
online help.  

Note:  If the license for the CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Open Files is not available on a backup node, the corresponding VSS 
writer will not be shown in the Source tab of the Backup Manager. 

 
 
 

The CA ARCserve® Backup Agent for Open Files allows backing up all files safely and consistently, even when they are open and 
continually updated by other applications. Without using open file agent, you cannot not back up open files. 

The  CA  ARCserve  Backup  Agent  for  Open  Files  provides 
services  that  allow  CA  ARCserve  Backup  to  safely  and 
consistently  back  up  open  files,  even  when  they  are 
continually updated by other applications.  

Normally,  when  an  application  opens  a  file  no  other 
application can access it.  The Agent for Open File solves the 
access  control  problem  and  enables  CA  ARCserve  Backup  to 
make a copy of the file.  

It  recognizes  file  open  requests  from  backup  programs  and 
allows  them  to  be  honored,  even  if  they  would  normally 
conflict  with  operating  system  file  access  control. 
Additionally,  the  agent  only  honors  file-open  requests  from 
backup  clients,  ensuring  that  all  other  applications  continue 
to be subject to normal file access restrictions.  

 

License  will  be  added  to  primary  server  instead  of  the 
machine  in  which  OFA  is  getting  installed  and  licensing 
would be count based.
