Appendix D: ISV licensing options for virtual tape 

HP strongly recommends the use of the backup application to migrate data from the HP VLS6000 
system to physical tape because using the backup application means all the media (virtual and 
physical) is tracked in the backup application catalog. This ensures reliable, robust data recovery.

However, because HP Virtual Library Systems present themselves as physical library systems, they 
require licensing just like a physical library. So in the preceding migration scenario two sets of 
licenses are required—one for the virtual library system and one for the physical library system. The 
licensing rules vary from software vendor to software vendor and are detailed in Figure 18. Over 
time, HP hopes more software vendors will revise their virtual tape licensing process to be based on 
raw TB capacity of the virtual library, rather than on slot count or drive count, which can be highly 
variable in a virtual library.
