Customer solution at a glance
At HTS, too, backup among multiple devices
threatened to take longer than the available time. By
beginning at 6:00 p.m., Crawford could get all
backups done by 6:00 a.m. the following day.
However 12 hours was a long time to tie up the
system, especially because running the backup process
degraded overnight network performance. This
impaired productivity for HTS remote workers who
needed access during the evening hours. Backup not
only took too long, but it also required hands-on
oversight, and impeded user productivity.
Sorenson knew that backup between multiple devices
was a sore spot and thought the new HP product
would help. He handed the D2D2T (disk-to-disk-to
tape) project to Crawford and told him to go make it
happen. “Like all HP solutions, the installation was very
straightforward; it just works,” says Crawford. “The HP
StorageWorks D2D Backup System provides one
location to backup all our data versus many. It
simplifies management of the process, and increases
security through controlled access to the device and
where it sits,” says Crawford. “I love getting smiles
when we talk about backup now, rather than having to
run and hide because something failed or took too
long.”
Safe and sound
Going with the HP StorageWorks D2D system eased
all of the HTS worries about moving from tape backup
to disk backup. One management server connected to
the D2D2T solution runs the backup execution for all
the servers. “We back up to the D2D system, and then
select which option we want – disk or tape. And of

course, the tape can be taken off-site to a secure site,”
says Crawford. “The StorageWorks D2D Backup
System allows you to configure up to six different
virtual tape drives or tape autoloaders, enabling six
servers to be backed up to a single D2D tower. Then
you can run those jobs all at the same time – instead
of sequentially – which dramatically improves the
speed of backup. Now our backups take as little as six
hours to run – cutting data-protection time in half.”
For HTS, the new capability solves their own backup
challenge, and expands the solution options they can
offer to their clients. The fast backup of multiple servers
to one device, combined with simplified management
and the option to copy directly to tape addresses a
significant operational challenge for many businesses.
“Going with the HP D2D2T solution gives our clients
the best of both worlds,” says Crawford.
Sorensen, too, is pleased with the beta test outcome:
“The HP D2D
Backup System is a great, supported
solution from HP, our trusted partner. This helps me
sleep better at night, knowing that our data and our
clients’ data is safe and sound.”
