  Full counterclockwise rotation opens the “gate”

  To achieve the Desired Squelch Setting (DSS), 
turn the Squelch control  counterclockwise 
until you hear noise.  Now turn the control 
clockwise just until the noise stops.  This is the 
DSS setting.
