● Backlight compensation
Exposure compensation to prevent a backlight phenomenon. Backlight refers to the 
effect of a subject becoming dark when a large amount of light enters the lens.
● Chapter
A unit used for segments of recorded content. By inserting chapters in each scene, the 
user can quickly move to the beginning of a desired scene. In effect, a “Bookmarks” 
function.
● Dolby Digital
An audio compression format that supports the multi-channel surround sound 
developed by Dolby Laboratories, Inc. in the U.S. Because this format allows audio to 
be compressed while minimizing the loss of sound quality, it allows the creation of DVD 
video with high-quality audio and videos. Generally referred to as “Dolby Digital 5.1” or 
“5.1 Surround”.
● DHCP
A mechanism wherein a router or similar device automatically assigns IP addresses 
and other identifiers.
● DPOF (Digital Print Order Format)
A standard that allows information used for printing to be written directly onto SD cards. 
Files in this format allow prints to be obtained quickly and easily from a DPOF-
compatible printer or commercial developing and printing service.
● Exif (Exchangeable Image File format)
A full-color still-image file format for digital still cameras approved by the Japan 
Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA). Exif is 
compatible with JPEG and TIFF and can be handled by most image processing 
software applications for PCs.
● Exposure bias
A process of adjustment or correction that allows the photographer to deliberately 
make the photographed image darker or lighter than the exposure automatically 
determined by the camera.
● Format
The process of configuring the content of hard disk drive or SD card so that it can be 
used to record data (also known as initializing).
● FULL SPEED MODE
A USB mode supported by the “USB2.0” and “USB1.1” standards. Uses a data transfer 
rate of 12Mb/sec.
● HIGH SPEED MODE
A USB mode supported by the “USB2.0” standard. Uses a data transfer rate of 480Mb/
sec.
● IP address
A number that identifies a computer connected in a network.
