8-pin serial interface
A connector on the printer you 
use to attach a LocalTalk cable from your Macintosh 
computer.
Address Resolution Protocol
The TCP/IP protocol used 
to dynamically bind a high-level IP address to a low-
level physical hardware address.
alert message
A message on the printer operator panel 
or in the Printer Monitor that occurs when printing is 
suspended. See also: status message.
AppleTalk
A network protocol designed by Apple and 
used to link Macintosh computers and peripherals.
application
A software program that performs a 
specific task such as creating a spreadsheet, a text 
document, or graphics.
ARP

ASCII
American Standard Code for Information 
Interchange. A coding used to represent text in digital 
computing.
baud
The rate of data transmission, measured in bits 
per second.
bitmap
A checkerboard dot-by-dot representation of a 
text character or graphic image.
cassette feeder
The mechanism that holds a paper 
cassette and feeds paper into the printer.
Chooser
A desk accessory on the Macintosh system 
you use to designate external resources such as file 
servers and network printers. 
click
To press and release the mouse button at the 
location you want an action to take place.
default
A setting that is automatically used by the 
printer unless you change it.
dialog box
A user interface displayed on the monitor 
screen that contains a message or requests information 
from you and allows you to enter the response.
DLC Protocol
The network protocol used by Microsoft 
and IBM networking products, including Microsoft 
LAN Manager, Windows NT, Windows for Workgroups, 
and IBM LAN Server
DOS
Disk Operating System.
