MUX (Multiplex)
In analogue television broadcasting a transmission channel (e.g. UHF
channel 42) has only one TV channel (program) or service. In digital
terrestrial television broadcasting, a transmission channel (e.g. UHF
channel 42) is divided into different sections that can have more than
one TV channel (program) or service. Such a transmission channel
used for digital terrestrial broadcasts is called a MUX.
NTSC
USA video standard with image format 4:3, 525 lines, 60Hz and 4MHz
bandwidth with a total of 6MHz video channel width.
PAL
European video standard with image format 4:3, 625 lines, 50Hz and
4MHz bandwidth with a total of 8MHz video channel width.
PID
(Video, Audio, PCR)
A digital signal is divided into so called packages (as suit cases on a
transport belt). Each packet holds certain information for Video, Audio,
timing and completeness of the packet stream so that the receiver can
compose a distortion free signal for your TV or radio.
QAM
Quadrature Amplitude Modulation is a technique where the signal is
polarized and modulated in order to get more TV or Radio channels into
a physical VHF or UHF channel.
RGB
RGB is used to transfer a TV signal in DVD quality. The quality is
superior to SVHS and CVBS.
RS-232 connection
A RS-232 connection allows you to connect equipment to the receiver
which supports the RS-232 protocol.
SCART cable
A SCART cable is also known as ‘Peritel’ cable and is commonly used in
Europe to connect the audio and video equipment. A fully furnished
SCART cable has 21 wires which is at both sides finished with a 21-pin
connector.
SVHS
SVHS means Super-VHS and is superior to a CVBS signal but less then
a RGB signal. Normally it is a single cable consisting of four wires
because the black/white (luminance) is separated from the colour
(chrominance).
Transmission mode
The COFDM technology spreads the data between many carrier waves.
The 2k mode has 1705 carriers for higher interference environments
and the 8k mode has 6817 carriers for lower interference environments.
UHF-band
Parts of this band (471MHz-860MHz) are dedicated for TV and Radio
broadcasting.
VHF-band
Parts of this band (171-470MHz) are dedicated for TV and Radio
broadcasting.
