Using FM TMC Traffic
Using FM TMC Traffic
Some aera models can receive FM TMC 
(Traffic Message Channel) traffic depending 
upon the traffic receiver connected to your 
NOTE: Garmin is not responsible for the 
accuracy of the traffic information.
The FM TMC traffic receiver is an optional 
accessory. FM TMC traffic receivers receive 
traffic information that is broadcast over the 
FM Radio Data System. 
The FM TMC subscription activates 
automatically after your Garmin GPS device 
acquires satellite signals while receiving 
traffic signals from the service provider. You 
can add other FM TMC subscriptions at any 
time. Check the Garmin Web site at  
 for other 
available services. 
Receiving Traffic 
Information
To receive traffic information, the following 
conditions must be met: 
The traffic receiver must be connected to 
the aera.
The traffic receiver and the aera must be 
connected to an external power source.
The traffic receiver and the aera must 
be in data range of an FM station 
transmitting traffic information.
NOTE: Heated (metallized) windshields 
could degrade the performance of the traffic 
receiver.
Traffic in Your Area
When you are receiving traffic information, 
a traffic icon appears in the upper-left corner 
of the Map page. The traffic icon changes 
color to indicate the severity of traffic 
conditions on your route or on the road you 
are currently traveling.

Traffic is flowing 
normally.
Yellow
Medium 
severity
Traffic is slightly 
congested.
Red
High severity
Traffic is heavily 
congested or 
stopped.
Grey

Traffic Data has 
not updated.
