Glossary 
Client/server 
 
A client is a computer that requests service from another computer (server). 
 
DNS 
Short for Domain Name Service.  A DNS server lets you locate computers on a 
network or the internet (TCP/IP network) by domain name.  The DNS server 
maintains a database of domain names (host names) and their corresponding IP 
addresses.  For example, the domain name www.examle.com might translate to 
198.105.232.4. 
 
DHCP 
Short for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, a server in a network or internet 
service that assigns IP addresses to the multiple stations on the network. 
 
Gateway 
An interface that connects two different networks (a LAN can be connected to the 
Internet through some kind of gateway.) 
 
IP Address 
Internet Protocol Address – every computer on the Internet has a unique identifying 
number, like 191.2.24.2 
 
LAN   
Local Area Network – a network of computers installed within a small area, such as 
an office building. 
 
Network 
Groups of computer that are connected together so that they can share resources 
and exchange data. 
 
POP3 
POP3 is the latest Post Office Protocol 3. This is a service that stores and serves 
emails for various client machines that are not connected to the internet 24 hours a 
day. Emails are held in POP3 until you log in.  OS2.ie customers receive Microsoft 
Outlook Express which is a POP3 piece of software.
