Light printing or no printing.
Print head too far from paper. Readjust print gap.  See “Print Head Gap
Adjustment,” on page 26.
Ribbon worn. Install a new ribbon cartridge.
Smudging of printed characters.
Print head too close to paper.  Readjust print gap.  See “Print Head Gap
Adjustment,” on page 26.
Paper does not feed properly.
Paper not loaded correctly.  Reload paper as shown in “Put Paper in the
Tractors”, Chapter 2 in the 
3860/80 User’s Manual.

Paper supply not correctly aligned with paper opening.  Reposition
paper.
Ribbon guide not placed properly on print head nozzle.  Reposition
ribbon guide.
Paper jammed.
Paper damaged on leading edge or not in tractor pins.  Remove paper
from printer, tear off the damaged part, and reinstall according to “Put
Paper in the Tractors”, Chapter 2 in the 
3860/80 User’s Manual.  Be sure
to remove all damaged paper from the printer.
Printer will not print to right end of page.
Right margin set too small.  Check Right Margin section (see “Setting
Right Margin” in Chapter 4 of the 
3860/80 User’s Manual).   This often
happens when switching to compressed print; all of the emulations
except ANSI set margins in columns.  When trying to print a spreadsheet
at 17 cpi, for instance, go into the application and set the margin to 17
times the width of the page in inches.
Printed menus are unreadable due to very short print lines.
Margins set too close together in the current format.   Press the FIRST,
1, ENTER, CLEAR keys to get out of the printed menu.   Note the format
assigned to the current paper path and temporarily use a format with
wider margins.
When attempting to go offline, the display switches to “ONLINE:ENTR CODE” and the
MODE and ONLINE lights flash continuously.
Online lock has been entered from the host.  Enter the correct code or,
as a last resort, initialize the printer.  See “Lock the Printer Online”,
Chapter 5 in the 
3860/80 User’s Manual.
