announces the end-of-sale and end-of life dates for the Cisco ONS
15454E STM-1 and STM-4 Fixed Optics Cards. The last day to order the Cisco ONS
15454E STM-1 and STM-4 Fixed Optics Cards is July 30, 2008. Customers with active
service contracts will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance
Center (TAC) as shown in Table 1 of the EoL bulletin. Table 1 describes the end-of-life
milestones, definitions, and dates for the Cisco ONS 15454E STM-1 and STM-4 Fixed
Optics Cards. Table 2 lists the product part numbers affected by this announcement.
New cards such as the Cisco ONS 15454E 12-port SFP-based Multirate Optics Card (MRC-12), at
10 Gbps or 2.5 Gbps, offer much higher-value propositions than the outgoing cards. The MRC-12
accommodates Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optics, providing higher port density and
multirate capability per slot than the fixed optics cards they are replacing. Both MRC cards support
STM-1, STM-4 and STM-16 as well, scalable up to 10 Gbps or 2.5 Gbps, depending on the card
and slot combination. The MRC cards also support SFPs of different reaches such as SH, IH, LH
and CWDM or DWDM. Plus, SFPs can be added to the cards as demand increases, and they are
per-port provisionable, thereby minimizing the initial costs and simplifying operations. Wavelengths
can therefore be added or changed without changing the card. The MRC cards can be provisioned
for operation with SDH protection options such as unidirectional-path switched ring (UPSR),
subnetwork connection protection (SNCP), path-protected mesh network (PPMN), two-fiber or
four-fiber bidirectional line switched ring or multiplex section-shared protection ring (MS-SPR), 1+1
automatic protection switching (APS) or multiplexed switching protection (MSP), and unprotected.
