Software licensing allows a product to ship with a base set of functionality enabled, while containing
advanced functionality that can be offered without a change in the underlying hardware. Using
executable licenses helps in preventing the illegal use of the advanced functions.

The Cisco RFGW-10 DS-384 line card supports QAM-capacity licensing where a partial QAM-capacity
can be invested on the line card. There are two types of QAM-capacity licenses, downstream license for
standard QAM channels (pilot QAM channels) and downstream span license (RF spanning license) for
replicate QAM channels. The licensing feature on the Cisco RFGW-10 DS-384 line card also supports
dual encryption features such as PowerKEY and Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) scrambling that
enable the customer to defer investing in QAM encryption until the entire network is ready for
deployment.
