Apacer Handy Steno AH124

Apacer has a knack of developing
interesting products and the AH124
continues this trend. Although it’s
essentially a flash drive, it’s quite
different from the usual rather
basically designed models we’re
accustomed to seeing.
For starters it has a quality leather
case, which the actual flash drive can
slip into and out of when needed.
You can show off the Apacer too
because its polished ring makes it
possible for you to attach it to your
existing keychain. All-in-all the
AH124 is a very well designed
product that won’t make you look
like too much of a geek.
The drive offers 2Gbytes of storage
capacity and uses the USB2.0
interface. In testing, the Apacer
performed well with regards to
reading performance though it was a
little sluggish when it came to
writing. Where Verbatim’s 4Gbyte
Store ‘n’ Go flash drive finished our
238Mbyte file transfer (from PC to
flash drive) in 26 seconds, the Steno
required 38 seconds. In terms of
reading performance though the
Apacer finished the copy job (from
flash drive to PC) in 10 seconds,
exactly the same time as the
Verbatim.
The drive ships with Apacer’s
Compression Explorer (ACE)software
and as you’d expect it offers data
compression and also provides a bit
of security in the form of password
protection. The software offers good compression ratios though
Winzip and WinRAR offer faster compression and decompression
speeds.
