All pulses in a TCAS (Mode S) message transmission from the directional antenna are
radiated as a directional main beam pattern. To obtain the main beam pattern, the four
signals representing each transmit pulse are individually phase shifted by the
MILACAS-FR Processor. The phase shifting imposed on the four elements represents
the direction of the main beam to be transmitted (one of four beams). The resultant
1030-MHz signals radiated from the four elements of the antenna combine and cancel
in a manner that creates a main beam directional pattern for each and all pulses
transmitted.
