HP DDS Data Cartridges
DAT is the most successful tape backup technology of all
time with more than 17 million DAT drives shipped since its
introduction in 1989
and a current world-wide installed base
of over 6 million drives. The technology is ideal for entry-level
and small networks requiring higher capacities with lower
cost of ownership. HP’s DAT media portfolio caters for all
customers with several
different capacity points
reaching up to 160 GB
on a single cartridge.
Key Features and Benefits
 Outstanding reliability. Durability standards for
HP DDS data cartridges are twice those required
to pass the DDS logo requirements.
 Optimum compatibility with HP StorageWorks
DAT drives and autoloaders, and with other
DDS-format drives.
 20-year guaranteed archival life.
HP DDS media is tested to environmental extremes
that exceed the parameters for other brands –
20 custom-built testing chambers are in use
24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
Hewlett-Packard carries out 1.3 million hours of
testing, including pollutant, climatic, environmental
and ambient tests, to overcome common faults such
as coating defects, edge breakdown and faulty
hub mechanisms.
The latest DAT 160 data cartridges will store up
to 160 GB of compressed data per cartridge at
a transfer speed of up to 49.6 GB/hour. Unlike
most other tape formats (AIT and DLT), DAT 160
provides backward read/write compatibility
with older formats – e.g. DDS-4 and DAT 72
– thus protecting customer’s investment in
DDS technology.
Each member of the HP StorageWorks DAT family
offers a complete backup solution including HP’s
unique One-Button-Disaster-Recovery (OBDR)
feature providing customers with the ability
to restore their systems quickly and effortlessly
with the touch of a single button.
HP has been involved in the design and
development of DAT drives since the beginning
and applies this experience to its current line of
DAT products. Not only does an investment in DAT
technology provide the security of a format with
a history of outstanding reliability, the legacy of
backward compatibility also provides the potential
for future expansion without compromising your
investment in the technology.
