The EtherXtend 2200 Series of DS3 Ethernet Access Devices (EADs) allows Carriers,
ISPs and PTTs to deliver Ethernet services to virtually anywhere, using standard
unframed/unstructured DS3 circuits. These units permit the efficient and reliable
delivery of Ethernet on a single DS3 or on a bonded pair of DS3 circuits. With the
ability to provide up to 90 Mbps of data transport, near native 10/100BT Ethernet
speeds can be achieved to deliver demanding LAN, WAN, and IP-based services to an
increasingly sophisticated generation of small and medium-sized business customers. 
The EtherXtend 2200 Series of DS3 EADs can be deployed at any location that is served
by one or more unframed/unstructured DS3s; and because they use Ethernet instead of
ATM or Frame Relay, they are optimized for the delivery of high speed Internet
Protocol (IP) traffic, including applications requiring high bandwidth, low latency
transport mechanisms such as video conferencing, digital video surveillance, IP
telephony and much more. 
The EtherXtend 2200 Series of DS3 EADs feature an integrated 4-port 10/100 Ethernet
switch and either one or two DS3 ports, each capable of delivering up to 45 Mbps of
bandwidth. On a 2-port device, the two DS3 ports can be bonded together to provide
90 Mbps data rates. The loop bonding technology used by the EtherXtend 2200 Series
DS3 EADs is the industry-leading, Net-to-Net (N2N) loop bonding protocol.
To maximize the total bandwidth available, the ETHX-22x4-DS3 devices operate in a
DS3 framer-bypass mode whereby the Ethernet traffic is mapped onto the entire 44.736
Mbps of each DS3 facility (including the overhead bits normally used for various DS3
framing formats). Therefore, unframed DS3 circuits (rather than M13 or C-bit Parity
DS3 frame formats) are to be used with ETHX-22x4-DS3 network extenders, and any
intermediary DS3 transport or multiplexing equipment must be set to regenerate the
entire 44.736 Mbps of bandwidth without modifying or omitting any of the bits
typically associated with overhead in framed DS3 facilities. By combining unframed
DS3s with N2N loop bonding protocols, the ETHX-22x4 devices offer automatic,
efficient, resilient, and configuration-free deployment with greater total throughput
capacity than a traditional DS3 circuit.
The EtherXtend DS3 EADs also supports many advanced network features, including:
802.1Q VLANs, built-in security features, advanced QoS and sophisticated bandwidth
management and control features available only with Zhone's unique Multimedia
Traffic Management (MTM) capabilities.
