there is now more air space around the internal
drive to aid in cooling. A silent 30 mm fan in the
Maxtor OneTouch III triple interface solution (50 mm
in the double-disk Maxtor OneTouch III solution)
exhausts warm air. This extra attention to thermal
conditions is important, as drives increase in speed
and platter count, because heat build-up is one of the
primary dangers to hard disk longevity, particularly
in warm environments. Note that many competing
products do not provide for similar airflow and cooling.
As mentioned earlier, the rubberized exterior helps
to minimize the risk posed by “G-shock,” or the
G (gravity) forces exerted on a drive’s internal
mechanisms by physical jarring. G-shock can result
in permanent damage to the drive, most notably by
causing a head crash, where the drive head scrapes
into the platter media, potentially wiping out data and
even rendering the drive permanently unusable.
Modern hard drives generally carry two G-shock
ratings, one for while the drive is operating. The single-
drive Maxtor OneTouch III solution, for example, has
been verified to safely and repeatedly withstand a 20G
shock for 8 ms, which equates to the drive being stood
vertically and knocked over onto its side on a Formica
surface while writing data to the disk. In part, this
robustness is due to the Maxtor OneTouch III drive
being mounted internally with thick rubber grommets
at each corner of the metal frame, offering a second
layer of protection.
Another enemy of disk drives is electrostatic discharge
(ESD). When you put on a sweater in the winter and
shock someone, the effect can be startling but hardly
dangerous. To ultra-sensitive micro-scale electronic
components, though, such a discharge can be
tantamount to being it by a bolt of lightning, and
literally roast circuits into oblivion. The Maxtor
OneTouch III solution uses multiple layers of protection
against ESD:
·
  The outer rubber padding,
·
  The exterior plastic shell,
·
  The internal drive frame,
·
The rubber grommets mounting the drive
   to the frame,
·
  Improved grounding.
No consumer electronics equipment is wholly
impervious to ESD, but Maxtor has ensured that the
Maxtor OneTouch III solution surpasses its rivals on
this point and significantly exceeds all recommended
protection specifications.
There are always ways to build and buy things more
cheaply. Want to shave $10,000 off your next house?
Just use cheaper siding and unlicensed labor.
