Pella lowers TCO, reduces risk and opens window for growth
with HP utility computing option
Manufacturer uses HP Integrity Superdome and Pay-per-use financing to power Oracle migration
“We looked carefully at both HP and IBM. Our long relationship with HP,
coupled with the price/performance of Superdome servers, the flexibility of
pay-per-use financing, and that we can leverage our backup site for both
development and business continuity, made it really work.”

HP customer case
study: HP Integrity
Superdome servers,
HP Serviceguard, HP
UX 11i v2, HP
Objective:
Support business growth, business continuity and
the company’s migration to the Oracle®
environment across 14 manufacturing locations
Flexible HP solution perfect fit for Pella improvement
project
Founded in 1925, Pella Corporation manufactures its
premium-quality windows and doors at 14 locations
across the United States. This industry innovator
produces both standardized and made-to-order
Pay-per-use (PPU)
financing; Oracle
Database 10g and
Oracle E-Business
Suite solutions
Industry:
Manufacturing
Approach:
Deploy a new platform to support the main
production Oracle Database 10g and a backup
instance at a remote recovery site using two HP
Integrity Superdome servers, HP Serviceguard
clustering technology, HP-UX 11i v2 operating
system and HP Pay-per-use (PPU) financing
Business technology improvements:
• Provides enhanced performance for critical
manufacturing databases
• Strengthens business-continuity resilience
• Meets needs for scalable, on-demand processing
power
• Enables flexibility via virtual partitions on a
single server
products according to lean manufacturing principles,
which employ continuous improvement to squeeze out
waste to deliver high-quality products to customers as
efficiently as possible. These demanding manufacturing
practices require continuous training and a high-
performance business technology (BT) platform based
on integrated Oracle® E-Business Suite applications
and Oracle Database 10g.
Thousands of customer orders flow into Pella’s Oracle-
based enterprise resource planning (ERP) system each
day from the firm’s network of Pella® Window & Door
Showrooms, as well as from leading retailers such as
Lowe’s. In early 2006, the corporation’s HP 9000
servers supporting the ERP platform were scheduled for
a capacity upgrade. Pella viewed the impending
change as an opportunity to improve business-
continuity resilience and the growth potential of its
production database platform.
Business benefits:
• Supports continued business growth
• Provides optimal price/performance via pay-per
use lease
• Accommodates Pella-wide conversion to Oracle
manufacturing suite
• Lowered testing and training costs – saved
approximately 6 person-months
• Mitigates risk associated with seasonal demand
• Yields efficient utilization of IT assets
‘Scale right’ unlocks the door to outstanding
cost/performance
Pella considered two main options: 1) scale out with
multiple clustered servers using Oracle Real
Application Clusters (RAC), or 2) scale up with
powerful multi-processor systems such as HP Integrity
Superdome servers or IBM p570/p590 servers. The
firm selected the HP Integrity Superdome after carefully
evaluating options and vendors.
According to Pella’s Director of IT Operations Jim
Thomas, the deciding factors in choosing the Integrity
