Completing Guided Setup
After you connect your Digital Media Server to your TV, its front panel displays
“SETUP.” You must complete Guided Setup before you can watch live TV or play and
record DVDs. Guided Setup takes less than an hour.
• Guided Setup is easy. The Guided Setup screens step you through the process. You
can find tips and troubleshooting in this chapter. (You may not see all the screens
described here, or you may see them in a different order, depending on your setup.)
If you make a mistake during Guided Setup, press LEFT arrow to go back and fix it.
You can also fix your setup information later in Messages & Setup. (See Chapter 6.)
• Guided Setup is intelligent. In Guided Setup, you tell your DMS about your program
source (antenna, cable, or satellite) and equipment setup. You complete only the steps
that apply to your particular setup.
• Guided Setup requires two phone calls. Try to complete Guided Setup when you
don’t need the phone for an hour or so. Later, you can use a broadband Internet
connection instead of a phone line to connect to the TiVo service. See Chapter 8.
After completing Guided Setup, you can watch live TV, play DVDs and CDs, record
DVDs, and use TiVo Basic
TM
service features to control live TV. You will have to wait a
few hours while the DMS organizes information before you can schedule recordings.

ZIP Code.
Your ZIP code helps the TiVo service determine the correct program
information to send to your DMS.
E-mail Address.
When you provide your e-mail address, you’ll be notified about what’s
new at TiVo, including new features, tips and tricks, and TiVo exclusives. Your e-mail
If you need to use the phone during
either of the setup phone calls, pick
up your telephone, then hang it up and
wait about 45 seconds. The DMS will hang
up, and the next time you pick the phone
up there will be a dial tone. You can
complete Guided Setup later.
