Interfaces

The 5100/6100 VDR supports the capability to add an IP address to carry voice traffic on a 

standard loopback interface. This IP address is local to the 5100/6100 VDR and is reachable from 

all other interfaces on the 5100/6100 VDR (i.e. you can ping this IP address from a connection 

on any of the other IP-enabled interfaces of the 5100/6100 VDR). Telnet, Web, and SNMP 

applications can be accessed on this IP address.
This feature can be used to add a “public IP” address to the VDR without adding it any of the 

externally visible interfaces, such as the LAN or the WAN interfaces. The Loopback interface is 

purely a private interface. Although the loopback interface is a private interface, the IP address 

assigned to it is publicly visible. This means that a host on the WAN side can ping this IP address 

even if NAT is enabled on the 5100/6100 VDR. 
For a publicly routed 5100/6100 VDR, the voice IP address is set to match the WAN IP address, 

which means that voice packets are sent over the WAN. See Figure 3-4.

Figure 3-5 shows how you can restrict the voice traffic to a private network. Without the loopback 

interface enabled, the voice traffic must pass through the private network to the service provider’s 

backbone router. By enabling the loopback interface to use a public IP address, you can allow
