CHAPTER 3
Interfaces
54
Vpacket 5100/6100 Series Reference Manual
Figure 3-1 on page 54 shows a network with a single 5100/6100 VDR with the WAN interface
configured to support a connection to the Internet and a LAN interface configured to support
three subnets. The IP addresses and subnet masks of each subnet are:
Network 1—10.10.10.254 255.255.255.0
Network 2—13.13.13.254 255.255.255.0
Network 3—15.15.15.254 255.255.255.0
To maintain privacy, each subnet is assigned an IP address that is not public and is listed as
primary (NATed).
Network 1 is segmented into two subnets: 10.10.10.0 to 10.10.10.127 and 10.10.10.128 to
10.10.10.255. The 10.10.10.0 to 10.10.10.127 range of IP addresses is set to support Dynamic
Host Control Protocol static hosts (see “DHCP commands” on page 106). The rest of the IP
addresses within Network 1 are allocated based upon need from a DHCP pool. At any one time
only one subnet can support DHCP. The PC hosts and servers on each Ethernet network can
communicate with each other but not across networks. For example, the PC host with IP address
15.15.15.1 cannot directly communicate with PC host 10.10.10.131 because they are located on
different networks.
The WAN interface is the public IP address, and all Internet traffic is routed through the WAN
interface of the 5100/6100 VDR to the LAN interface and on to the LAN through the Ethernet
switch. The default gateway for data traffic within the LAN is set to 10.10.10.254 (same as the
private LAN address). All LAN (static routing and NAT) and WAN interface configuration
examples within this chapter refer to Figure 3-1.
