“We use virtualization to increase server utilization
and optimize the value we can offer to clients.
Virtualization lets us run more applications on the
same server, which saves money and enables us to
offer a better price to our customers.”

and multiple sites – which helps perdata deliver
tailored disaster-recovery and business-continuity
services for clients. Initial backups go to an HP
StorageWorks 6518 Virtual Library Systems, providing
fast disk-to-disk backups and fast restore times for lost
files and data. Each day perdata also copies backups
to three HP EML and MSL libraries for long-term offsite
storage.
Less equals more with virtualization
More than 90 percent of perdata’s clients host their
technology infrastructure in perdata data centers
on 180 HP ProLiant and Integrity servers. To reduce
overhead costs, ease operator burden and deliver
more responsive services, the firm actively uses server-
virtualization technology. HP server and storage
virtualization capabilities provide perdata with an
adaptive infrastructure that delivers the flexibility to
quickly allocate resources for new clients or new
projects for existing clients.
Whenever appropriate, perdata deploys new
applications on virtual servers created by using
VMware ESX Server on ProLiant servers and HP-UX
11i Virtual Partitions (vPars) within the HP Virtual
Server Environment on HP Integrity systems. “We
use virtualization to increase server utilization and
optimize the value we can offer to clients,” says
Maschke. “Virtualization lets us run more applications
on the same server, which saves money and enables
us to offer a better price to our customers.”
perdata has 38 VMware virtual machines running on
seven HP ProLiant systems and four vPars distributed
across seven Integrity servers. “We eliminated 20
physical servers through virtualization,” Maschke
recalls. “That’s 20 servers we don’t have to replace.
We also save approximately $25,000 (excluding
personnel costs) on licensing, service, floor space and
the cost of power and cooling.”
HP delivers flexible, well-priced, available power
for SAP
The managed services provider devotes its HP
Integrity servers to high-priority applications, including
specialized SAP Industry Solutions (IS) applications
such as SAP IS-U for utilities and IS-H for hospitals and
other healthcare providers. perdata also runs SAP
Business Warehouse, SAP Business All-In-One, SAP
NetWeaver and SAP ERP 6.0 on HP Integrity systems.
“We trust the HP Integrity platform for our most critical
SAP instances,” Maschke emphasizes, “because we
know that HP and SAP work very closely together
to make sure SAP applications are certified on HP
Integrity servers. The robust availability and flexible
partitioning provided by HP Integrity systems helps
reduce the support burden and keeps costs low.”
The firm aggressively deploys HP ProLiant server
blades, which save administrative time, valuable data
center floor space, plus power and cooling costs.
Explains Maschke, “We have 136 employees, but
only 15 actually run our technology resources; the rest
are in marketing, sales and general management.
To achieve that level of efficiency requires a highly
automated, reliable adaptive infrastructure that allows
us to leverage skilled staff. HP server blades are
an important tool for delivering high-quality client
services at affordable rates.
“perdata is very dedicated to HP,” concludes
Maschke, “for three main reasons: first, we try to
maintain a homogeneous environment to reduce our
