The recommended replacement for the Cisco IDS Version 4.x Sensor Software is the IPS Version 5.1. The Cisco IPS 5.1 sensor software delivers 

both promiscuous based IDS and inline based IPS functionality to the Cisco IDS/IPS sensors. Version 5.1 also delivers new functionality that is not 

supported on the version 4.x sensor software train. Such features include, but are not limited to:

4210-K9, IDS-4235-K9, IDS-4250-SX-K9, IDS-4250-TX-K9, IDS-4250-XL-K9, IPS-4240-K9, IPS-4255-K9, NM-CIDS-K9 (promiscuous mode 

only), and IDSM2.
