White Paper
Changes in Cisco Prime Collaboration Assurance
Related to Discontinuation of Cisco Medianet
As you may know, Cisco had to wind down its investment in Cisco Medianet

technology due to low adoption. As part of this decision, Cisco decided to drop Cisco
Medianet technology completely from Cisco IOS
®
 Software routers and switches, the
TC/CE image, and plans for Cisco Jabber
®
 clients.
Cisco Prime
Collaboration Assurance is one of the applications affected by this decision. In the Cisco Medianet
portfolio, Cisco Prime Collaboration Assurance is using the following technologies for voice and video session
troubleshooting:
●
Mediatrace: Provides media path trace and hop-by-hop quality-of-service (QoS) statistics.
●
Media Services Interface (MSI): Installed on the video endpoint, it provides 5-tuple for end-to-end path
trace initiated from a video endpoint.
●
IPSLA VO: Generates synthetic video traffic to measure WAN bandwidth availability for video calls.
As part of the transition plan, Cisco has decided to invest in the software-defined networking (SDN) controller
(Cisco
®
Application Policy Infrastructure Controller Enterprise Module [APIC-EM]) to replace the Mediatrace
functionality for enterprise customers. There is no replacement plan for MSI and IPSLA VO at present.
To participate in the above transition plan, Cisco Prime Collaboration Assurance will undergo the following
changes:
Cisco Prime Collaboration Assurance Advanced:
●
In Version 11.0 and later, the IPSLA Video Diagnostics feature will not be supported. Customers using this
technology are expected to stay in Version 10.x if they want continuous support. Note: IPSLA Voice Test
will continue to be supported.

●
In Version 11.5 and later, Mediatrace and MSI technology will not be supported. Customers using these
technologies for video session troubleshooting are expected to use APIC-EM-based session trace or stay in
Version 10.x.
The updated Cisco Prime Collaboration Assurance Troubleshooting feature using APIC-EM, planned for Version
11.5, will have the same hop-by-hop display graphic and will display the jitter, packet loss, and differentiated
services code point (DSCP) for each hop, similar to the way that Cisco Medianet sourced information was
displayed prior to Version 11.5. In Version 11.5 and later, the Cisco Medianet sourced statistics are not supported.
