The settings on the Distance
page enable us to change the
appearance of puffs depending
on how far away they are from
the emitter.
Here we are saying that we want our puffs to begin changing 100 units from the
Emitter and that they should be completely changed when they reach 500 units.
Emitter and that they should be completely changed when they reach 500 units.
Still on the Distance page, click the small triangle to the left of the Color gradient
to open the Color gradient options.
On the Distance page, the left
edge of gradients determines
what happens at the Near Range,
the right edge what happens at
the Far Range.
Disable the Display result option if it is enabled.
We are doing this simply to give us a clearer display in the Color settings, without
the transparency effect of the alpha distracting us.

Double-click on the left-hand color knot below the gradient and use the color
selector to change its color to green.
Here we are saying that the change we want to link to the distance the puffs are from
the emitter is the color of the puffs.
the emitter is the color of the puffs.
Drag the right-hand knot away from the gradient to delete it.
For simplicity we just want the puffs to turn green, so there is no need for the gradient
to change color here. The left-hand side of the gradient decides what happens at
the Near Range distance, the right-hand side decides what happens at the Far Range.
With this setting, as puffs get further away from the emitter, the more green they will
become, until they hit the Far Range distance when they will be completely green.

In the Object manager, select the Emitter and in the Attribute manager, on the
Particle page, set Birthrate Renderer to 30.
The default birth rate of particles is a bit low; here we are simply increasing the birth
rate so that there will be more particles and we can see the results more clearly.
Render the animation.
Three or four seconds of the animation at a low resolution should be enough for us
to see the results of what we have done. Note that because there is a default alpha
gradient mixed with the Color gradient, the particles not only change color over time
but also fade out gradually.
