Adds Perlman, “Plus, with the Integrity architecture, we
can see a growth pattern where we can add nodes to
a cluster. Windows 2003 will let us scale to three
eight-node Integrity clusters, which will save us money
on licensing and support.”
HP Integrity servers in other areas of the company are
already proving their worth. WellPoint affiliate HMC is
using a four-way cluster of Integrity rx8640 Servers to
support SQL 2000 and 2005 databases. Another
WellPoint business unit recently adopted the same
model for its development environment instead of
purchasing an IBM WebSphere-based server, which
would have made porting UNIX
®
cost prohibitive. This
business unit is planning to deploy another Integrity
server to operate a claims processing system, Oracle
database, and HP-UX 11i. They chose the Integrity
platform to accommodate anticipated growth of 30
million members by 2008.
In addition, the company recently ordered eight
HP ProLiant DL580 G4 Servers, which will the staff
will use with VMware ESX Server to create virtualized
servers. The company counts on HP Integrated Lights-
Out (iLO) to remotely manage them. “iLO is the best
remote management tool out there in my personal
opinion,” Peddicord says. “We have a lot of remote
sites where there is not an IT person present, so having
virtual media is very helpful.”
All in all, HP technologies are helping the IT staff
deliver on their targets, as well as obviate risks and
escalating costs. Those are the reasons the CTO
recommended that WellPoint purchase Integrity
servers—and why the staff is looking forward to
launching the database consolidation on the Integrity
platform. Although the company’s recent acquisition
activities have temporarily suspended new server
purchases, the CTO expects its consolidation initiative
to move ahead shortly. “We saw the Dual-Core
Itanium-based Integrity server work, and that’s what
we feel comfortable with,” Perlman says.
