Belgium’s National Institute for Health
and Disability Insurance Improves
Flexibility and Reduces Costs With
HP StorageWorks Solution
Belgium’s National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (NIHDI) organizes,
manages, and supervises Belgium’s compulsory health insurance and disability
program. The NIHDI was using an IBM Enterprise Storage Server Model E20
(also known as the Shark E20) to handle storage for its mainframe as well as
industry-standard Open Systems hardware.
The Shark E20 was at the end of its life cycle. NIHDI was looking to replace it
with a storage solution that would work with mainframe and Open Systems,
offer high reliability, be cost-effective, and provide greater flexibility.
NIHDI offered a public tender for a comprehensive storage solution, and
received bids from multiple vendors. NIHDI chose an HP StorageWorks Enter-
prise Virtual Array for its Open Systems. The HP solution received the highest
scores from NIHDI based on a variety of criteria, including the systems’ technical
features, service-level agreements promised by HP, the total cost of ownership,
initial price, and how well it integrated into the existing infrastructure. For the
mainframe storage, NIHDI chose an HP StorageWorks XP Disk Array.
As a result of the new HP storage infrastructure, NIHDI has a more flexible,
scalable storage solution that is highly reliable, less expensive to support, and
easier to manage than the previous solution. The combination of the EVA and
the XP Disk Array allows NIHDI to support mainframe and Open Systems
hardware and applications.

BENEFITS AcHIEVED
Work with
The HP StorageWorks solution has been able to provide storage for
multiple systems
each of the mainframe and Open Systems architectures.
Provide highly
Since deployment of the HP storage solution, NIHDI has had no
reliable storage
storage-related downtime.
Improve flexibility
The EVA allows NIHDI to easily allocate and reconfigure storage for its

Open Systems.
HIGHLIGHTS
Goal: For Belgium’s National
Institute for Health and Disability
Insurance (NIHDI) to replace its
mainframe and Open Systems
storage infrastructure with a new
one that is more flexible, efficient,
cost-effective, and that can work
with industry-standard hardware
as well as the mainframe.
Solution: HP StorageWorks XP
Disk Array and HP StorageWorks
Enterprise Virtual Array
Results: NIHDI now has a more
flexible, scalable storage solution
that is highly reliable, less expensive
to support, and easier to manage
than the previous solution. The
combination of the EVA and the
XP Disk Array allows NIHDI to
support mainframe and Open
Systems hardware and applications.
