In today's information-centric world, it is imperative
that organizations protect their growing information
assets to ensure business continuity, meet global data
mobility requirements, and ensure compliance with
new stringent data retention and recovery regulations.
For long distance data replication over IP, Fibre
Channel over IP (FCIP) is the commonly used
technology. Hewlett-Packard offers three product
families for SAN FCIP extension and remote data
replication: the B-Series family, the C-Series family,
|and the HP StorageWorks IP Distance Gateway.
The B-Series family and C-Series family offer both
director blade/module options as well as standalone
units. The IP Distance Gateway is a standalone unit.
Current offerings include:
• HP StorageWorks B-Series Multi-Protocol Router
Blade (B-Series)
• HP StorageWorks 400 Multi-Protocol Router
(B-Series)
• Cisco MDS 9000 Storage Networking Modules
(C-Series IPS-8, 18/4 14/2)
• Cisco MDS 9222i, MDS 9216i (C-Series)
• HP IP Distance Gateway for B-Series and
C-Series SANs
In order to provide guidance in choosing the correct
solution, performance testing was done to compare
the three product families. The purpose of this overview
is to document the results of running comparative
performance measurements between HP’s three SAN
extension product families.
The guidelines and recommendations in this overview
are not absolutes; the best fit will depend on the
customer’s needs and requirements, including specific
feature sets of a product. The goal is to help HP
customers decide which product is best suited to meet
their business and technical requirements.
Test Configuration
A simple SAN extension configuration was used for all
the testing. In the case where the IP Distance Gateway
was tested, two additional switches were added to the
configuration due to the fact that the IP Distance
Gateway does not have Fibre Channel (FC) switching
capability. An Empirix latency simulator was used to
simulate various latencies and link speeds.
Performance Comparison of HP SAN Extension
products using Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) technology
Hewlett-Packard provides three families of FCIP
Gateways. This overview summarizes performance
characteristics of these SAN extension products to help
customers decide which product is best suited to meet
their business requirements.
