together the best of anti-virus and anti-spyware capabilities
in a single engine.
At the end of January 2007, signature updates for prior releases
of eTrust

automated engine update process, bringing those installations

any questions or concerns you may have.
Q. What are the benefits of a single anti-virus engine to customers?
A. CA believes that the singe anti-virus engine update provides
a comprehensive and easy to manage solution for securing
customers’ computing environments against a growing range
of increasingly sophisticated threats — while keeping
technology ownership costs under control.
Immediate benefits as a result of this change include:
– Streamlined system management
– Reduced network bandwidth requirements
– Reduced computer system overhead
– Increased, industry-leading signature responsiveness
Q. How can I protect my network from malware threats?
A. CA Anti-Virus defends your network against incoming viruses
and malicious mobile code (such as Java Applets and ActiveX)
on SMTP, POP3, FTP and HTTP protocols before they can enter
your network. Additionally, it verifies the digital signatures of
signed objects, authenticates the Certificate Authority that
issued the digital certificates and analyzes each Java executable
object to be downloaded. CA Secure Content Manager (CA SCM)
is a complementary gateway protection product that deters
data confidentiality breaches, web and messaging threats.
Q. Why does my organization need gateway protection?
A. With an increasing number of companies relying on the
Internet for information and services, malicious code attacks
are a frequent occurrence. Because organizations like yours
need to protect their networks against today’s threats, CA
Anti-Virus provides real-time attack intervention — automatic
detection, as well as blocking and notification of potentially
malicious content, such as viruses, Java, ActiveX, VBScript and
improperly signed/digitally signed objects. Furthermore,
provides immediate protection through out-of-the-box;
predefined policies that can help your organization reduce
implementation time. CA SCM is a complementary gateway
protection product that deters data confidentiality breaches,
web and messaging threats.
Q. How does CA Anti-Virus detect viruses?
A. CA Anti-Virus scans files, comparing them against a library
of known viruses, or suspicious activity utilizing advanced
technologies. Once detected, malicious code can be addressed
utilizing the system cure feature of CA Anti-Virus, which
detects and cleans a virus, and also addresses the cleanup
functionality that other vendors only address in separate
utilities. CA Anti-Virus also detects polymorphic and stealth
viruses, which modify themselves in an attempt to avoid
detection. In addition, CA Anti-Virus checks the boot sector
and memory during virus scans.
Q. When will CA Anti-Virus check for viruses?
A. CA Anti-Virus real-time monitor runs in the background,
scanning files as they are executed and/or written to and read
from a disk in real time. Virus scans can be manually run or
automatically scheduled to analyze all or selected files. CA
Anti-Virus detects viruses in files downloaded from the
Internet, online services and email systems, including
compressed file archives.
Q. What type of reporting can CA Anti-Virus provide
out-of-the-box?
A. CA Anti-Virus provides seventy five different types of
graphical and detailed reports, including numerous top ten
virus reports, signature exception lists, as well as hourly, daily,
weekly, monthly and quarterly reports. It allows you to report
on a per-machine or per-user basis. You can also generate a
report on users who have anti-virus installed and those who
do not. You can even determine the engine and signature file
versions for virtually every system in your network.
Q. Does CA Anti-Virus offer protection for Non-Windows
Platforms?
A. Yes, CA Anti-Virus delivers the industry’s most extensive
anti-virus protection platform from the PDA to Windows,
Macintosh (including Mac Intel OS X), Linux, UNIX and
NetWare. Additionally, CA Anti-Virus r8.1 offers native
support for Microsoft 64-bit Windows for Intel and AMD
platforms. CA Anti-Virus also supports Microsoft Exchange,
Lotus Notes, CVP Firewall, Microsoft Proxy Server, ISA Server
and Network Appliance NAS devices.
Q. Why should I buy the CA Threat Manager from CA versus the
best-of-breed point products?
A. The CA Threat Manager r8.1 solution combines best-of-breed
CA Anti-Spyware r8.1 with CA Anti-Virus r8.1, extending the
functionality of both products with a central, web-based
management console and increasing efficiency through a
common agent, logging facility and updating tools. The
solution warns, detects, analyzes and provides remediation
across the enterprise from an entire range of threats, attacks
and malicious code, including viruses, worms, spyware, key
loggers and Trojans.
