Staying alive: HP Serviceguard for Linux
keeps healthcare applications healthy
At one of Luxembourg’s biggest hospitals, HP Serviceguard for
Linux and HP BladeSystem with VMware maximize uptime for the
applications that count.
“In our hospital environment, SAP has 500 users almost around the
clock, [and] Oracle database applications about 650. Since deploying
HP Serviceguard, we’ve had no unplanned downtime due to application
problems. We’re happy with its performance. It’s been very robust.”
—Paul Hoffmann, System Administrator, Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg
Objective
Achieve high availability for critical applications
Approach
Use a combination of HP Serviceguard for Linux
and HP-provided VMware on the HP BladeSystem
to minimize planned and unplanned downtime
Business benefits
Enhanced care due to zero application
downtime to date
Improved resilience due to clustering
and virtualization
Reduced administration time through HP as
single-source provider
30% faster time to value through deployment
with HP Professional Services
IT improvements
Improved server uptime
Maximized uptime for non-cluster-aware
applications through virtualization
Recovery time objective (RTO) of 5 to 10 minutes
for key applications achieved
Ability to failover manually by application to
balance loads

Industry: healthcare
The first priority
When it comes to healthcare, staying alive
is important.
It just so happens that people in Luxembourg are
slightly better at this than people in the United States.
Average life expectancy in Luxembourg is about a
year longer.*
One factor that helps to extend lives in Luxembourg is
a strong public healthcare system. A key part of the
system is Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL)—
one of the nation’s biggest hospitals.
At CHL, System Administrator Paul Hoffmann and
a team that includes Marcel Hamer and Leopold
Meunier have a mission: keep important IT
applications alive so that they’re available to serve
patient care 24x7.
To achieve high availability—and get the server and
storage solutions that make it possible—CHL turned to
HP. Three of the hospital’s most important applications
are protected by HP Serviceguard for Linux. About
20 other applications are clustered in a virtualized
environment using VMware running on
HP BladeSystem c-Class server blades. Storage is
provided by an HP StorageWorks EVA 4000.
