Meanwhile, JCC has started shifting several
Windows-based Dell machines to HP ProLiant BL460c
Server Blades and plans to use VMware to achieve
virtualization capabilities, server consolidation, and
easier administration. “The condensing of platforms
allows us to spend dollars in a much more targeted
fashion by concentrating on fewer systems,” Jalbert
notes. To this end, JCC gets much mileage from
ProLiant server blades and the HP Integrated Lights
Out 2 (iLO 2) Advanced Pack. “HP ProLiant blades
give us great speed,” he notes, “and with iLO 2, I can
sit many miles away and manage my systems and my
customer’s systems.”
Best-of-breed storage and server systems
During the Integrity blade implementation, JCC
installed an HP StorageWorks 4400 Enterprise
Virtual Array (EVA4400). Operating in the OpenVMS
and Windows environment, the EVA4400 affords
extraordinary data transfer speeds, high capacity
utilization, and easy provisioning of storage resources
by way of HP Command View EVA software.
Combined with an HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure
housing Integrity and ProLiant blades, the EVA4400
affords a centralized point for managing storage and
servers together.
Jalbert explains, “We went with the EVA4400 for disk
performance reasons; to accomplish a centralized,
virtualized storage focus at JCC; and to not have
armies of disks everywhere. We wanted our storage
unit to harmonize with both our Windows and
OpenVMS environments and it does. With Command
View EVA management software, we configured the
new EVA4400 in a few hours.”
He continues, “The EVA4400 is so price attractive and
has exceptional performance. The concentration of
disks in the EVA4400 allows us to target disk space
where needed, and the flexibility of its virtual devices
far exceeds our expectations.”
By all accounts, JCC has brought its computer room
leaps ahead by employing best-of-breed storage and
the HP BladeSystem. Jalbert concludes, “Our
HP environment lets us focus on our high-end
customers and their big-time databases.”
