Avaya Modular Messaging Concepts and
Planning Guide
13-21
To determine the IMAP4 requirement for a single MSS voice mail
domain, planners must calculate the estimated simultaneous IMAP4
users. For example:
!
If the total user population = 1,750
!
Percentage of users with IMAP4 access
3
 = 50%
!
Total number of IMAP4 users = 875
!
Percentage of IMAP4 users simultaneously logged in
!
Estimated simultaneous IMAP4 requirement = 700
Inactive IMAP4 clients are timed out by the server after 30 minutes.
However, clients that check for new messages at a periodic interval of less
than approximately 30 minutes are never timed out.
POP3 client limits
POP3 clients perform background polling to check for new messages
every few minutes. This polling is CPU-intensive and limits the number
of POP3 clients that can be configured on a Modular Messaging—MSS
system.
For this reason, it is important to calculate the number of POP3 clients
that can be supported for large configurations requiring 80 ports or
approximately 5,000 mailboxes.
Use the following rule for calculating POP3 client limits:
(POP3_CLIENTS x 0.007) + (PORTS x 0.4) <= 70, where
!
POP3_CLIENTS = Number of POP3 clients
!
PORTS = Number of voice ports sold
This calculation ensures that CPU occupancy will be less than 70% and
must be satisfied for the configuration to be valid.
Modular Messaging—MSS supports up to a maximum of 20,000 local
subscribers in a voice mail domain, all of which can be enabled for MWI.
