"RECALL" and enter relevant filename or choose from directory of "DATA" 
directory, and recall it (Press enter whilst on filename field). 
 
ELSE Go to "SYSTEM SET UP" and select "OTU INFO". Now enter the number of 
OTUs on the line, and then for each of those OTUs enter its number of control and 
reply bytes in the appropriate fields. OPTION The line can be given an identifier 
string if required (9 alpha numeric characters) and this is simply entered in the 
"LINE REF" field. OPTION Each OTU may be given its own individual identifier 
string if required (9 alphanumeric characters). To do this select the OTU by 
entering the appropriate address in the "SELECTED OTU" field, and then move to 
the "OTU REF" field and enter the identifier. Repeat this for all OTUs as required. 
Now close this screen (press ESC) and select "TRANSMISSION SYSTEM". Now 
select on this screen the correct information for the line, i.e. 2 or 4 wire, baud rate 
and half or full duplex. OPTION This information can now be saved, from top 
menu select "MANAGER", then select "SAVE" enter relevant filename (8 
characters which usually give a good indication of which line it is) or choose from 
directory of "DATA" directory (NB if it already exists in the directory the user will be 
prompted as to whether or not it is to be overwritten), and save it (Press enter 
whilst on filename field). 
 
Now the Instation test set is ready for use. 
 
Connect it in at the appropriate jack sockets at Instation or Outstation 
 
Now enter the "DATA ENTRY / TESTING" screen and communications will 
commence. 
 
Modes can be changed by going to the "ITS MODES" screen and selected OTU 
can be changed by going to "OTU INFO" screen. Quick keys are available for 
these actions to allow easy changing from the "DATA / ENTRY TESTING" screen. 
 
4.5.3 Fault Diagnosis 
4.5.3.1  Instation Test Set Error Log and Indicators 
The test set keeps a log of all of the different types of errors it finds in the 
communications, and below is a list of the faults, (to see if there are any additional 
fault logs recently added to the ITS check HELP on the "DATA ENTRY/TESTING" 
screen). The fault log is displayed in a window at the right hand side of the screen 
and is switched on and off and cleared using special keys whilst in the "DATA 
ENTRY / TESTING". For keys see HELP on "DATA ENTRY / TESTING" screen. 
 
BIC/BIR 
Break in Control/Break in Reply message. Carrier unexpectedly 
went off before the complete Control/Reply message was 
received. 
CFE/RFE 
Control / Reply message framing error, i.e. missing stop bits. 
CCRC/RCRC 
Control / Reply message crc failures. 
SL  
First byte received when looking for start of the control message 
(after having previously been synchronised) was not a Sync byte. 
Either corrupted or simply wrong message.
