Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
The Netopia Firmware Version 8.4 includes a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent, allowing
monitoring and configuration by a standard SNMP manager. Netopia Routers now suppor t SNMP-V1 and

SNMP Heartbeat Trap
Netopia Firmware Version 8.4 implements a new enterprise-specific SNMP trap, called the hear tbeat trap. This
has been added to the SNMP MIB file npaV2trap.mib. This trap suppor ts the Netopia NetOctopus network
monitoring tool.

When enabled, this trap is periodically sent to a management station to confirm that the connection between
the device and the management station is still active.

Note that the serialNumber (defined in the netopia/sysParams table) and sysObjectID (defined in the
mib-2/system table) values have been included in this trap. The SNMP agent IP address is present in ever y

A single configuration item is required for hear tbeat traps – the time inter val between traps. Permitted values
are 0 – 65535 minutes. A value of zero, the default, means the trap is disabled. Whenever the inter val value is
set to a non-zero number, a trap is sent immediately and the new (or same) inter val value takes effect.

This MIB is available by anonymous ftp from the Netopia ftp ser ver.
