6.6 Configuring WEP Encryption
Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a security protocol specified in the IEEE Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi)
standard. WEP is designed to provide a WLAN with a level of security and privacy comparable to that
of a wired LAN.
WEP may be all that a small-business user needs for the simple encryption of wireless data. However,
networks that require more security are at risk from a WEP flaw. The existing 802.11 standard alone
offers administrators no effective method to update keys.
To configure WEP on the access point:
1.
Select
Network Configuration
->
Wireless
->
Security
from the access point menu tree.
If security policies supporting WEP exist, they appear within the
Security Configuration

screen. These existing policies can be used as is, or their properties edited by clicking the
Edit
button. To configure a new security policy supporting WEP, continue to step 2.
2.
Click the
Create
button to configure a new policy supporting WEP.
The
 New Security Policy
screen displays with no authentication or encryption options
selected.
3.
Select either the
WEP 64 (40 bit key)
or
 WEP 128 (104 bit key)
radio button.
The
WEP 64 Settings
 or
 WEP 128 Settings
field displays within the New Security Policy
screen.
4.
Ensure the
Name
of the security policy entered suits the intended configuration or function
of the policy.
