Reference Guide for the Model RT338 ISDN Router

Troubleshooting

In the preceding test, the second channel is added immediately after the first channel successfully
connects. If your router is configured for bandwidth on demand (in which the second channel is
added only when there is heavy data traffic), you may still experience Multilink failures. The most
common reason is that the two calls placed by your router may not both reach the same ISP router.
If your ISP maintains more than one router at the dial-up location, it is possible that your two calls
may reach two different routers at the same dial-up number. In this case, your ISP may not be able
to join the two calls. The log messages may say “Unable to join bundle.”
Troubleshooting Internet Applications
Well-known incompatibilities exist between NAT and certain Internet applications such as online
games and videoconferencing programs. In general, problems occur in the following cases:
When an application embeds IP address and port number information in the data portion of the
packets
When an application uses the connectionless UDP protocol for speed although the
connection-oriented TCP protocol is more appropriate
In order for these applications to function properly with NAT, the router must recognize the
particular application and process it with a specific workaround. The Model RT338 router is
capable of recognizing and functioning with many popular applications such as:
NetMeeting
CuSeeMe
Microsoft PPTP client
Microsoft Traceroute
RealAudio
VDOlive
IRC
ICQ
Quake
If you have problems with such an application that is not specifically supported by the
Model RT338 router, you can often let the application run correctly on one local PC by forwarding
all unmapped incoming packets to that PC. You can do this by entering that machine's IP address
as the default SUA server in Menu 15.
