Reference Guide for the Model RT338 ISDN Router
2-2
Installing and Connecting the Router

Local Network Requirements
Hardware Requirements
The Model RT338 ISDN Router is intended for use in a network of workstations that are
interconnected by twisted pair Ethernet or Fast Ethernet cables.
Each workstation in the network must meet the following requirements:
Each workstation must have an installed Ethernet network interface card (NIC).
Each workstation must be connected by a hub or switch. If all workstations on the network do
not run at the same speed (10 Mbps or 100 Mbps), a dual-speed hub or switch must be used.
Each workstation with a link operating at 100 Mbps must be connected with Category 5 cable.
Software Requirements
The Model RT338 ISDN Router uses the Internet Protocol (IP). The IP configuration of your
network must satisfy the following requirements:
All PCs must have TCP/IP installed and selected as the networking protocol.
All PCs and the router must be assigned IP addresses. If your ISP has not assigned registered
IP addresses, your local network uses private addresses as described below. If you are using
the default Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) function of the router, these private
addresses are assigned automatically by the router when the PCs are rebooted.
All PCs must have the IP address of the router defined as the default gateway. If you are using
the default DHCP function of the router, this IP address is assigned automatically by the router
when the PCs are rebooted.
