DHCP commands
The Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) commands allows you to set up ranges of IP
addresses to be assigned in real-time to hosts in the local area network. The Vpacket
implementation of DHCP provides for two modes: pool and static host.
Pools provide dynamic allocation of IP addresses from a specified range. The static host option,
Pools provide dynamic allocation of IP addresses from a specified range. The static host option,
however, provides manual allocation and is used only when a particular host is trying to get an IP
address. The static host configuration uses the MAC address, unique to each machine in a
network, as an identifier so only one host can get the IP address. Both modes can be
implemented; however, the DHCP server looks first for static host configuration and then for
pool configurations.
Before you can set the parameters for a pool or a static host, you must first name them.

Caution. When IP multinetting is enabled, you can use DHCP on only one network.
Figure 4-2 on page 107 shows the 5100/6100 VDR as a server set up to dynamically allocate an IP
address from a range to the one PC host. This example also illustrates the web server as a DHCP
static host, which always requires the same IP address.
