Pre-installation Site Checklist 
Initial network site survey. These answers need to be obtained from the site’s network manager 
or discovered by inspection. These items are in addition to the usual cut-sheet items involved in a 
traditional telecom installation. 
 
  Are we installing new wiring or using existing wires? 
  Is all wiring at least CAT5?  
  List existing switches by brand and model number  
  List existing routers by brand and model number  
  Are there any vendor maintenance agreements on the existing equipment? 
What are the details? 
  Are there any hubs in use? 
  Are there any hubs, switches, etc. on the network besides those in the wiring 
closet(s)? 
  Does every location where there is an existing phone have an RJ-45 jack for 
access to the LAN?  
  Is there UPS-protected power in the place where the system will be located? 
  Note the capacity of UPS equipment, if existing.  
  Is PoE desired or required? 
  Are there strong opinions about whether voice and data traffic should travel on 
the same wiring or be separated? 
  What type of Internet connection is in use at the main site? 
  Are there WAN connections? 
  What is the nature of the WAN connections between sites? 
  Is there a VPN? 
  Are there firewalls? 
  Can the routers, VPN or firewalls be made capable of handling VoIP? 
  How many total sites would be served by this phone switch? 
  Who manages the IT infrastructure here? 
  If it is a third party who manages infrastructure, can we arrange a 3-way 
conversation with them? 
  What is the total number of users? 
  What is the total number of off-site users? 
  Is Unified Messaging desired? If so, obtain details of the customer’s email 
systems. 
  Obtain or create a diagram of the customer’s existing network (if not a green 
field installation). Include IP addresses for all subnets, routers, and servers.
