Optimize Your Infrastructure for Each Application
in Seconds
In a dynamic business environment, business agility is critical to your
success. The Cisco® Composable Infrastructure software-defined
infrastructure (SDI) solution lets you treat infrastructure as code,
disaggregating compute resources so they can be programmed and
automatically managed more efficiently. This extends the functionality
of Cisco Unified Computing System™ (Cisco UCS®) management so
you can treat your infrastructure resources as fluid pools that can be
composed dynamically. Resources are allocated, provisioned, and
reprovisioned to support specific application and workload needs.
You can compose infrastructure in seconds, or let the application
compose the infrastructure automatically, on demand. The results are
significant TCO savings, greater business agility, and better application
performance.
Infrastructure as Code: Delivering Agility, Flexibility,
Performance
Cisco UCS was the first system to treat infrastructure as code. Its
innovative approach disaggregated network I/O and has delivered many
benefits for our users. As a result, Cisco UCS has gained broad market
acceptance with over 45,000 customers worldwide.
The innovative features of Cisco UCS include:
•  Software object model: Cisco UCS hardware is not configured
directly, but employs a stateless server model. Everything about the
compute system, including server personality, configuration, and
connectivity, can be set on demand through Cisco UCS service
profiles.
•  Virtual interface card (VIC): The number and type of I/O devices can
be configured on demand across physical and virtual servers.
•  Network and port extension: Cisco Virtual Machine Fabric Extender
(VM-FEX) bypasses software-based switching of VM traffic by
the hypervisor for external hardware-based switching in the fabric
interconnect. It reduces the load on the server CPU, provides faster
switching, virtual NIC visibility, and supports rich network management
for local and remote traffic.
Composable Infrastructure extends the innovative capabilities of Cisco
UCS even further. In Cisco UCS M-Series Modular Servers, local
storage is disaggregated from a traditional monolithic server block
(Figure 1). When used in combination with the policy-driven automation
of Cisco UCS management software, you can realize significant
business benefits from SDI.
