Powering and Configuring the Cisco MXE 3500
When you first set up the Cisco MXE 3500, you should use the initial configuration procedure to enter
the IP address and password information. Doing this enables the device to connect to the Internet. You
can then access the Cisco MXE 3500 through the IP address for further configuration. Before installing
the Cisco MXE 3500 licenses, you must complete initial configuration.

You need this equipment to perform the initial configuration:

Cisco MXE 3500 Configuration DVD
•
Keyboard with USB connector
•
Monitor
Follow these steps:
Step 1
Connect the keyboard and monitor to the Cisco MXE 3500 rear panel (see
). Connect your
network cable to the 10/100/1000 Ethernet port 1.
Step 2
Locate the Cisco MXE 3500 Configuration DVD. Be prepared to load the disk immediately following
power up.

Press the Power On/Standby button
on the Cisco MXE 3500 front panel.
Step 4
Quickly open the DVD tray and insert the configuration DVD. You must insert the disk within the first
15 seconds of startup so that the Cisco MXE 3500 boots from the disk.

Step 5
When the MXE Appliance Configuration Menu appears, select Configure Network Settings and OK.

Enter these required network settings: Primary Network IP Address, Primary Network Mask, and
Default Gateway. Optional: enter the Hostname, Domain Name, and DNS Address. Select Next to
continue.

Enter a Username and Password. The password is temporary; you will be prompted to change the
password when you first login to the UI. Select Next to continue.

Do not use these usernames: mxe-user, mxe-service, root, or admin.

Select Next in the Device Type screen.
Step 9
Select Save in the Confirmation screen to complete the initial configuration. When the MXE Appliance
Configuration Menu appears, select Exit and OK.

The Cisco MXE 3500 will eject the configuration DVD and reboot. The screen is blank while the
Cisco MXE 3500 completes the configuration process which can take up to 15 minutes to complete.

Caution
Wait a minimum of 15 minutes before continuing with any operations.
After you complete the initial configuration procedure, you can access the web UI and install the
