Process
This application provides a system that allows AOEM’s and their suppliers the opportunity to repair large defects within the
clearcoat layer of the paint system. A large defect could be defined as an area equivalent to approximately 1-2 square feet.
The types of defects that are typical of this area are orange peel, overspray and blend lines.
Tech Tip: Due to the variety of layering systems present within the automotive marketplace, abrasive selection within all
steps of these systems may vary slightly depending on the particular technology present within the account.
Step Number 1 — Sanding
• Attach disc pad, 3M
Stikit
Roloc
Disc Pad (2" x
5/16
"), to Dynabrade
®
Mini-Dynorbital Model #57502.
• Attach abrasive disc, 3M
Finesse-it
401Q Imperial
Wetordry
Pa 2500A, to disc pad.
• Spray abrasive disc and the surface with water.
• Tech Tip: The use of water will help to extend the life of the abrasive product and assist in providing a uniform
surface finish.
• Sand the affected area.
• Tech Tip: Sand using an overlap pattern. Initial step should be in the horizontal direction followed by the vertical
direction. (See below)
• Tech Tip: In an attempt to reduce the potential for “wild scratch” events, always start the sander when it is in
contact with the surface. Additionally, always stop the tool on the work surface before lifting the tool and lift the
tool at a 90° angle.
• Remove the sanding residue when complete with a Scotch-Brite
High Performance Cloth.
Step Number 2 — Surface Scratch Refinement
• Attach disc pad, 3M
Hookit II
Disc Pad (3" dia.), to Dynabrade
®
Dynafine
®
Sander, Model# 57900.
• Attach abrasive disc, 3M
443SA Trizact
Hookit
II Foam Disc Grade A5, to disc pad.
• Spray abrasive disc and the surface with water.
• Sand the affected area using the overlap pattern as described in step Number 1 above.
• Tech Tip: To ensure appropriate scratch refinement, avoid moving the tool too quickly. As a starting point, a
velocity of approximately 6 to 12 inches per second is recommended.
• Remove the sanding residue when complete with a Scotch-Brite
High Performance Cloth.
