The race to create the biggest screens with the most resolution is hotly contested. In addition, these screens should able to 

play the latest games and handle the new demands of 3D movies, as well as to produce natural lifelike colours.  The new 

HDMI 1.4 specification cable is key to enabling these leading edge technologies.  We’d like to introduce you to the unique 

qualities that this next generation cable possesses.

While it’s amazing to watch state of the art high resolution videos shown on 1080p TVs, it’s incredible to think that even 

bigger TV’s with the same sharp definition of current 40-50’’ 1080p HDTVs, are just on the horizon. Experts say the next 

generation of TVs will start ranging upwards from 70’’ screens.  This years Consumer Electronics Shows (CES) have seen 

TV manufacturers showcasing leading edge technologies like the long anticipated 4k x 2k resolution, effectively quadru-

pling the number of pixels in a 1080p TV. These innovative approaches will enable a crystal clear home cinema experience 

even with the largest sized displays and screens.   

 

Movie studios and game creators are about to revolutionize the way in which we use and experience home entertainment.  

New types of movies, like 3D, and games simply require more bandwidth to be effective.  For example, a 3D effect is 

achieved by sending 2 separate images through your TV, one for each eye.  Currently, these images need to e refreshed 

at rates of 60 Hz and 120 Hz, and will double to rates of 120 Hz and 240 Hz in TVs and other sources.  To enable this, a 

bigger bandwidth is required.

Enjoying last summer’s snapshots on the big screen is the way many people have come to experience photo albums.  But 

have you ever noticed that the colours that your camera captures are different than those that your television shows? The 

new HDMI 1.4 specification cable has enhanced the “colour space” so that the colours are as natural and lifelike as those 

captured by the camera.   Further, Blu ray players have upgraded their colour spectrum to include 16-bits. Each of these 

upgrades require more space.  The new HDMI 1.4 cable is a superhighway enabling faster information transfer.

Finally, an alternative to the jungle of cables. In the future HDMI 1.4 will have Ethernet built in, as well as audio-return so 

that the same cable can carry video to your TV from your AV receiver to also carry audio back to your AV receiver from your 

TV.  Features such as these will be available on products during the spring of 2010.

the exception of the function of Ethernet over HDMI, which is only needed for components and sources that have those 

functions.

HDMI Ethernet Channel

Audio Return Channel 

Allows an HDMI-connected TV with a built-in tuner to send audio data „upstream“ to
