HISTORICAL
WATERMARK
The symbol of the cross with four circles at its ends and
one in the middle is if not the first, at least one of the
first examples of watermark. The “water sign” was used
to certify the Fabriano origin (Fabriano is a town) of the
paper defending it against any counterfeiting attempt
(the watermark technique was unknown elsewhere) and
to distinguish the different workshops present in Fabriano
between them (a sort of trademark). We entered this old
sign in the commemorative logo of the anniversary of the
Fabriano paper. In fact the watermark was invented here
in the Middle Ages. On the other side, however, we want to
underline its modernity: the watermark is still the easiest
way to distinguish a genuine banknote from a fake. The
Fabriano paper, 750 years of contemporaneity!
