Taking care of your customers after the app is in their hands
T
he approach Microsoft has taken with its Windows Phone 7 platform is
very different from its approach with Windows Mobile. The Windows
Mobile platform was targeted primarily toward businesses; the secondary
audience was consumers who liked its computerlike user interface. The
Windows Phone 7 platform, on the other hand, is targeted toward consumers
with the expectation that employee demand, combined with some
business-friendly features, will bring this device into the corpo-
rate environment.
Many professional app developers wrote apps for
the Windows Mobile platform, now called Windows
Phone Classic, under the proprietary specifications
of companies for their employees. Sales volumes of
the Windows Mobile platform grew in triple digits
in the middle of the last decade. It competed well
with the other smartphones available at the time,
such as the BlackBerry and the Palm Treo.
The overall smartphone marketplace, loosely defined
as cellphones that could run third-party applications
with the option of a mobile data connection for real-time
updates, was growing very quickly. However, none of the
existing competitors had the buzz that was seen when Apple
announced its iPhone.
