IT Architects Impressed With HP PolyServe Performance and Reliability
HP investigated several solutions and technologies, and determined that HP
PolyServe Software would be ideal for what it was trying to accomplish. HP
chose the solution because the PolyServe Software runs on Linux, is high-
performance, offers high availability, and works with HP’s existing applications,
servers, and storage. In addition, team members had worked with HP PolyServe
Software in a previous installation at a business not related to HP, and had been
pleased with its performance.

“I had worked with the HP PolyServe Software previously, and had been extremely
impressed with its performance and reliability,” says Utsav Agarwal, HP Systems
Analyst. “It had all the features that we required to achieve our goals.”

Installation went smoothly, and only took a few hours per server. HP decided to
rebuild the Linux kernel from source, because it wanted to have full control of
the process, especially for security reasons. HP PolyServe Software allowed the
Linux kernel to be easily rebuilt.

Paul O’Connor, HP RCM engineer, says, “Installation was extremely easy. Apart
from one configuration file change, the RCM application basically ran straight
out of the box on the PolyServe cluster. We had absolutely no problems at all.”

HP now has two HP PolyServe Software clusters consisting of a total of 16
nodes running Red Hat Advanced Server (4AS-U3). each cluster has eight HP
ProLiant BL460c server blades with two dual core processors and with 650GB
of SAN storage, which is scheduled to increase. The two clusters are redundant.
One is used primarily for application testing, and development, and serves as a
backup cluster. The other is in full production. The solution is fully compatible
with the HP StorageWorks XP and evA Disk Arrays, and with the HP Integrated
Lights Out (iLO) software used on the HP ProLiant BL460c server blades.

HP PolyServe Software Improves the Performance and Reliability of RCM
The HP PolyServe Software has improved performance, reliability, and availability
of the RCM application. The new solution is easier to manage than the previous
solution, and far more scalable. Due to the HP PolyServe Software, the shared
filesystem is more reliable, resulting in improved performance and reliability of
the RCM application.

Performance improvements have been, in some cases, dramatic. Previous to
deployment of the HP PolyServe Software, it could take up to 30 minutes to
obtain a large directory listing. After deployment, getting that same large
directory listing takes around 30 seconds. This has allowed IT staff to more easily
