CARSON Air Zermatt SA 315B „Lama“ 50 050 7041
Air Zermatt – SA 315B „Lama“
Since 1968 the Air Zermatt became famous in commercial, touristic
and rescue sectors and is established one’s reputation over the
national border. In the 70’s the Air Zermatt carried out the first direct
rescue from the notorious north wall of Eiger, Badile and Matterhorn.
Many different rescue systems have been developed in these many
years of experience in mountain rescue. The rescue helicopters are
accompanied with anaesthesia doctors, paramedics and rescue
medical equipment. Their help is called over 1’500 times per year. The
Air Zermatt occupies over 60 employees and operates with 9 in-house
helicopters, such as 3 “Lama’s”. These helicopters are used above all
for transportation in high mountains and as well for rescue operations
and evacuations over 3500 m/altitude. The Lama with its big round
panoramic view is very popular for sightseeing flights. Depending on
the operation the helicopters can be equipped with rescue hoist and
search light for night missions.

The first flight of the “Lama” made in France by Sud Aviation (Aerospa-
tiale) took place on March 17, 1969.
The helicopter has an Turboméca Artouste IIIB engine with 870 hp
power. The kerosene consumption is around 220 liter/h and that offers
the option to raise load capacities up to 900 kg whichever the altitude
and temperature are. The rotor has an aperture of 11.02 m and the
body length amounts to 10.26 m. The plexiglass cabin, with the round
panoramic view, offers place for 4 passengers. The basic weight of
the helicopter averages 1050 kg, the tank has a capacity for 575 liter
kerosene, which brings a range of approximately 650 km.
The maximum speed amounts 220 km/h. The service ceiling of the
“Lama” averages up to 7000 m/altitude.
