Glossary 

CM 

Communications module 
Module for communications tasks that is used in an automation system as an interface 

expansion of the CPU. Same interface types of a CPU and a CM are functionally identical. 

CMT 

Configuration and Monitoring Tool 
Program user interface of TELECONTROL SERVER BASIC. Used for configuration of the 

telecontrol server and monitoring of the connections to the remote stations. 

CP 

Communications processor 
Module for expanded communications tasks that provides the CPU with additional interface 

types or communications options. 

Direct communication 

With direct communication, the S7 stations communicate directly with each other without the 

frames needing to be forwarded by a master station or station.

GPRS 

General Packet Radio Service 
Packet-oriented service for IP-based data transmission in GSM networks. GPRS data 

packets can also be transferred via the Internet. The data is transmitted using the Internet 

protocols TCP/IP or UDP/IP. 

GPRS direct (mode) 

Mode of the CP 1242-7 for direct communication between remote S7 stations via the GSM 

network. This mode is selected when it is known that the communications partner can be 

reached using a fixed IP address. This is made possible by the services of the network 

provider. No telecontrol server is necessary.
